Aligning leaders. Shaping what’s next.

Early in February, CJC leaders and emerging leaders came together for our 2026 Leadership Day, which was a dedicated opportunity to step back from day-to-day delivery and focus on alignment, culture and leadership impact.

As CJC continues to grow, maintaining clarity of direction and consistency of leadership is essential. Leadership Day provides space for open discussion, shared learning and strategic reflection across the business.

A Focus on Direction and Capability

The day combined strategic thinking with practical leadership conversations, covering:

Vision and future direction
Strengthening and maintaining a healthy pipeline
Leveraging data and systems to support informed decision-making
Business development in 2026
People leadership and collaboration

Rather than concentrating on operational detail, the sessions focused on leadership behaviours, decision-making and the broader responsibilities that come with growing a resilient and future-ready organisation.

Importantly, Leadership Day was not limited to senior leaders. Including emerging leaders reinforces CJC’s commitment to developing the next generation of leadership capability and building depth across the business.

Guest Insights and Industry Perspective

We were pleased to welcome Holly McGhee and Andrew Warren-Smith from EY, whose session on shaping the future with confidence set a strong and reflective tone for the day. Their insights reinforced the importance of mindset, clarity and adaptability in leadership.

We also extend our thanks to Michael Eager, Dan Taylor, Orla O’Sullivan, Jason Morris, and members of our Business Development panel for facilitating open and practical discussions throughout the program.

A particular thank you to Ed Riley, who provided a valuable perspective on business development and networking. His session encouraged leaders to think beyond traditional approaches and instead focus on authentic relationships, long-term reputation and meaningful engagement within the industry.

The day was hosted by Colin Calder and Nicola Mills, who reinforced the importance of leadership alignment as CJC continues to evolve. We also acknowledge the work behind the scenes to coordinate and deliver a seamless event.

Regional & Remote Airports: Real solutions for funding gaps, capital works, and ongoing maintenance challenges

At this year’s Australian Airports Association Pavement and Lighting Forum, CJC Regional Project Lead Jacki Parish delivered a powerful address to industry leaders, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable investment and strategic collaboration in regional and remote aviation.

With firsthand experience managing a regional airport, Jacki understands the operational and financial pressures that councils and asset owners face. While routine maintenance is typically manageable within existing budgets, major capital works, such as runway resurfacing and lighting upgrades, can cost millions. In many cases, regional councils are expected to contribute up to 50% of these costs through ratepayer revenue. It’s a model that is not only challenging but unsustainable, particularly when future maintenance costs for upgraded assets are not adequately considered.

A Call for Change

Jacki’s message is clear: Regional and remote airports are essential infrastructure and must be treated as such.

Addressing the sector’s current challenges requires a multi-pronged approach

Funding cycles must be needs-based and reflect the real-time requirements of regional infrastructure.
Project proposals must be strategically aligned with broader planning objectives to unlock long-term value and access to available grants.
Collaboration between regional airports and stakeholders must be prioritised to reduce duplication, maximise investment, and deliver shared outcomes.

Driving Practical Support for Regional Infrastructure

Jacki’s commitment to regional and remote aviation extends beyond the forum. She is currently leading a CJC initiative, working alongside FundFindrs to assist councils and airport operators in identifying and securing government grant funding for critical infrastructure upgrades. In New South Wales alone, four active funding programs are available to support disaster resilience and recovery works across airport facilities.

The ANZAC Bridge: Engineering an icon of Sydney’s infrastructure

As we reflect on the contributions of so many on a day of national significance like ANZAC Day, it feels fitting, especially as engineers, to acknowledge the ANZAC Bridge.

This structure, a bold feature of Sydney’s skyline, is sometimes overshadowed by its older sibling, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Yet the ANZAC Bridge stands as a powerful symbol of Australian civil and structural engineering excellence.

A vital link in Sydney’s infrastructure

Spanning Johnstons Bay, the ANZAC Bridge carries the eight-lane Western Distributor (A4) and links the inner suburbs of Pyrmont and Rozelle. It connects Sydney’s CBD with the Inner West and is an essential artery in the city’s transport network.

Beyond its functionality, the bridge is a statement of innovation, representing the evolution of engineering in Australia from practical necessity to architectural landmark.

A legacy of ingenuity and vision

The bridge’s story began as a response to increasing traffic on the second Glebe Island Bridge, a steel swing bridge opened in 1903. That bridge, itself a feat of early 20th-century engineering, had become a significant bottleneck by the 1980s. It replaced an even earlier timber beam bridge opened in 1862.

Construction of the new structure began in 1992 and was completed ahead of schedule in 1995 at a cost of around A$170 million. Initially named the Glebe Island Bridge, it opened to traffic on 3 December 1995.

On 11 November 1998, the 80th anniversary of Armistice Day, the bridge was officially renamed the ANZAC Bridge by NSW Premier Bob Carr, in honour of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

Today, an Australian flag flies atop the eastern pylon and a New Zealand flag on the western pylon. Bronze statues of WWI soldiers from both nations—sculpted by Alan Somerville—stand at the western end of the bridge. The Australian soldier was unveiled on ANZAC Day 2000, and the New Zealand soldier followed in April 2008.

Engineering excellence

The ANZAC Bridge is a cable-stayed design, the longest of its type in Australia at the time of completion. It features:

Two diamond-shaped reinforced concrete pylons, each 120 metres tall from base to tip (approximately 69 metres above the bridge deck).

128 stay cables in a semi-fan arrangement, anchored to the pylons and supporting the bridge deck.

A deck width of 32.2 metres, accommodating eight traffic lanes and a shared pedestrian/cycle path.

Early vibration issues in the cables caused by rain and wind-induced vibration were first managed with stabilising cables and later upgraded with hydraulic dampers, demonstrating how engineering solutions evolve over a structure’s lifecycle.

The bridge was constructed by Baulderstone Hornibrook, with foundation works carried out by Leighton Contractors. The Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA, now Transport for NSW) provided the design, led by Ken Wheeler and Ray Wedgwood.

Then and now: The role of digital construction

When the ANZAC Bridge was built, digital tools were in their infancy. Today, projects of similar scale would be almost inconceivable without digital construction technologies.

It is an exciting time, as our business grows, and we expand into other territories and continue to work on interesting, complex and rewarding projects with fantastic clients and partners. It’s more important than ever that we ensure coordination across our diverse teams. We foster and prioritise transparent and consistent communication to understand our objectives and processes. Together we discover how we can overcome any challenges ahead.

At the beginning of February, we gathered colleagues from our offices and project sites, bringing our teams together for our Quarterly Update.

These updates give us the valuable opportunity to reflect on achievements, align our goals, and set the course for the months ahead. We ensure everyone is equipped to drive success for our clients. With a fantastic 2024 behind us, 2025 is already an exciting year.

We heard from various leaders across the business, who shared their visions for 2025, to align our thinking around greater opportunities for cross-discipline collaboration, and illustrate the new ways in which we can support our valued clients.

A highlight was an insightful presentation by our Digital Construction team, showcasing their expertise in this rapidly evolving and increasingly valuable area. Digital construction employs innovative techniques and processes and drives growth and transformation within our business. In addition, it also delivers forward-thinking solutions that bring real value to our clients, enhancing project efficiency, safety, and stakeholder engagement outcomes.

Taking a moment from strategic discussions, we had the privilege of learning from Ray Good from The Good Place. Ray’s session on mindfulness and focus offered simple yet powerful techniques to enhance productivity and well-being. As a former top 100 DJ, Ray knows a thing or two about balancing noise with moments of silence.

Our greatest strength is our people, and this Quarterly Update was a great reminder of that. The day concluded with a well-earned dinner, providing an opportunity for the team to reconnect and strengthen relationships.

CJC Management’s third Quarterly Strategy Workshop of 2023

Fostering a collaborative environment, the team came together at our Sydney head office for the third Quarterly Strategy Workshop of 2023. This event holds significant importance on CJC Management’s calendar, offering a platform for collective brainstorming and innovation. It’s also a valuable opportunity for team members from different offices across the country to come together and share insights.

The day began with a Welcome to Country and a warm welcome to our new team members. The morning workshops focused on solidifying the business strategy and defining our 90-day goals. We also engaged in lengthy discussions about upcoming opportunities and strategies for global business growth. Our objective was to ensure the team was set up to success with the relevant knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in their roles.

One of the highlights of the day was an insightful presentation from Michael Kilgariff, former CEO of Roads Australia and Managing Director of the Australian Logistics Council. He provided valuable insights into the upcoming changes in the infrastructure sector, emphasising industry shifts and policy refinements. These insights served as a solid foundation for our collaborative discussions.

As part of our ongoing commitment to employee well-being, we introduced Foremind, our new Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This program is a valuable resource designed to support our team’s mental health both in and out of the workplace.

To add a dynamic touch to the afternoon, we facilitated a Mentor’s Walk, a popular activity that allowed for a mutual exchange of experiences and advice, ultimately strengthening our team’s relationships. After the Mentor Walk, we came back all together to our head office in North Sydney. Reflecting on the past three months, our Managing Director, Michael Eager, presented the company wins, project updates and KPI’s from the past quarter and the company goals for the upcoming one.

As part of our Employee Appreciation Program, we had a special moment to celebrate the team member who joined our 5-year Club. Our success story wouldn’t be complete without the unwavering loyalty of our team. These outstanding professionals have shown dedication for half a decade, and we are proud to applaud their achievements. The day concluded with a team dinner, marking the end of a productive and rewarding event. We extend our gratitude to everyone for delivering exceptional services to our clients and for their achievements this quarter.

John Shaw Dinner 2023

On April 27th, the John Shaw Dinner took place at the magnificent Sydney Town Hall and was attended by some of the most accomplished engineering professionals. Members of our team had the opportunity to celebrate excellence in the engineering industry at what is widely regarded as the most prestigious event on the Roads Australia calendar.

Additionally, the industry celebrated the 28^th recipient of the distinguished John Shaw Medal – Dr Charles MacDonald.

The John Shaw Dinner provides a fantastic chance to reinforce relationships and expand our network with other professionals, ultimately leading us to strategic connections.

The award recognises Dr MacDonald’s lasting contribution to Australia’s integrated transport network and his exceptional contributions to the engineering industry. Dr MacDonald is widely recognised as a leading figure in the Australian civil construction industry in both the private and public sectors. He has worked as a chartered civil engineer for fifty years, delivering road infrastructure in Australia and in overseas locations including the UK, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.

It was an honour for us to be connected with so many accomplished professionals on such a special night.

Achieving gender equality and elevating women in the industry has been a part of our mission from the get-go!

To mark International Women in Engineering Day, our teams are learning even further on how to put the highest standards of equality at the centre of everything we do.

In conjunction with our second Quarterly Update of the year, our teams in Sydney got together to reconnect with one another last week.

We also had the pleasure to welcome Leadership Coach, Loretta Mitchell as she led an inspiring leadership training for our team.

Empowering Women in STEMM: Insights from the Women in STEMM Leadership Summit

Sarah and I attended a Women in STEMM Leadership Summit in March this year, which aims to equip emerging and established leaders with the tools and inspiration needed to become influential, visionary, and forward-thinking. Featuring accomplished women leaders from all STEMM sectors, insights offered valuable perspectives for attendees at all career stages. The conference was interactive, thought-provoking and inspiring, and I would like to share a few personal highlights from some of the speakers, including the real-time illustrative capture of the summit content.

Sarah Stante, NSW State Manager – CJC & CaSE, and Sumesha Durais, Area Manager, attended the Women in STEMM Leadership Summit held in Melbourne on the 21st and 22nd of March 2023.

Jane MacMaster from Engineers Australia shared her views on work-life integration, providing flexibility to employees while establishing personal boundaries within the workplace. She highlighted different arrangements implemented by employers and shed light on their effectiveness. This was followed by a mini masterclass on working women’s guilt which focused on identifying our personal values. When our personal values align with those of our workplaces, we are more likely to have a satisfying career.

Mahin Sonia (AWS), presented a masterclass on practical techniques for team motivation. Her expertise and authenticity resonated, addressing common challenges faced by female leaders in the industry. I found the following speakers enlightening even though their industries were not the same as mine:

Kerry Louise Philips, a longstanding Qantas pilot on overcoming double standards in the workplace.
Brenda Denbesten, from BHP, explained sponsors and their role in her career over the years.
Sonia Adams, GHD CCO, on “no straight lines from A to B” as she described the squiggle that was her career path.

The panel discussion on “The role of leadership in setting a healthy workplace culture that attracts female talent” featured leaders from Arup, Aurecon, GHD, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This session revealed that only 11.2% of working engineers in Australia are women, and that gender equity will drive better business performance. Sarah’s key take-outs included:

Make inclusion and cultural safety a real and visible organisational value
Increasing diversity and intersectional participation is everyone’s responsibility
Active listening as a leader to lived experience is a key indicator on the success of inclusion initiatives is within the teams

The two-day summit featured a range of engaging activities, including bite-size masterclasses, roundtable conversations, and thought-provoking “fireside” discussion panels presented by accomplished women in various STEMM disciplines.

These speakers shared insights at different stages of their careers, offering valuable perspectives for attendees to consider. The summit was a great occasion for knowledge exchange and networking, inspiring participants to forge their paths toward success in STEMM fields.

The summit also featured interactive workshops on managing intimidation, understanding the impact of gender norms, and mentoring training, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

An illustrator captured the discussions and presentations in real-time, creating visual representations that served as valuable reminders of the event’s content.

Sarah and I enjoyed the connectivity across STEMM sectors that the Women in STEMM Leadership Summit offered, and sharing the unique challenges faced in STEMM sectors. We now have some extra tools to build our leadership capabilities and ideas for increasing diversity in our business. CJC Attends John Shaw Awards Dinner

A few of our executive team members had the privilege to attend The John Shaw Award Dinner on Thursday 19th May 2022.

This year, Road’s Australia presented the John Shaw Medal to Louise McCormick who has made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the Northern Territory Government’s goal of a $40 billion economy by 2030. Congratulation Louise!

We had the privilege to listen to the one and only Dr. Jane Goodall (Scientist, UN Messenger of Peace).

One of the key highlights for us was receiving our membership certificate and having the opportunity to catch up face to face with our peers in the industry.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the CJC team to be a part of.

Why is it called The John Shaw Medal?

John Shaw was born on 26 August 1902 and worked for the Main Roads Boards of New South Wales for several years. In 1940 John was enlisted in the Royal Australian Engineers Field company when Second World War broke out.

John was sent to Malaya to assist the defence of Singapore where he was taken prisoner and held in the notorious Changi prison.

At the end of the war, John was liberated and awarded the Distinguished Server Order award.

On returning to civilian life in Australia, Shaw resumed his work with the then Department of Main Roads.

John was overseeing various post-war infrastructure projects such as the Gladesville Bridge where he served as Chief Engineer and eventually rose to the office to Commissioner for Main Roads.

After his retirement, John Shaw served as the Deputy Chief Commissioner of the City of Sydney and National President of the Australian Road Federation.

He is the only Australian ever to have been honoured by the International Road Federation as “Man of the Year”.

The John Shaw Award, which was initiated in the Queensland Region of the Australian Road Federation, acknowledges his outstanding contribution to roads.

CJC Attends UN Women Australia’s Annual IWD Lunch

Last week, the women of our Sydney team attended the UN Women Australia’s Annual International Women’s Day Lunch.

We had the privilege to listen to the one and only Dr. Jane Goodall (Scientist, UN Messenger of Peace), interviewed by Linh Do, a sustainability activist and Director of the Wattle Fellowship from the University of Melbourne.

It was a great experience to get together with fellow inspiring women on a special day and ignite conversations about equality.

This was an insightful experience and we learned a lot and went home more inspired than ever.
